What Bolt-In Actually Means for the Installer
Bolt-in shelving is different from bolted construction. The difference matters. Bolted construction means the shelving itself is assembled with bolts rather than rivets, which is a durability feature. Bolt-in means the shelving is mounted to the vehicle using bolts into factory-provided hard points, which is a DIY-friendly feature. Modern commercial cargo vans, including Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, and Mercedes Sprinter, are designed with upfitter hard points engineered into the cargo area walls and floor specifically for mounting shelving and partitions. Bolt-in kits are designed around these hard points. The installer does not drill into sheet metal, does not cut panels, and does not modify the vehicle in any way that cannot be reversed.
The Install Process, Tools, and Time
The install process for a bolt-in kit is structured to be completed by any owner-operator with basic tools. A typical kit install takes four to six hours for a full-side shelving configuration. The tools required are: a socket wrench set, a torque wrench, a step ladder, and a tape measure. Every fastener is included in the kit, pre-packaged by install sequence. Documentation walks through the install step by step with torque specs at every fastener. No welding. No drilling into sheet metal. No cutting or trimming panels. The shelving aligns to the factory hard points exactly as designed. If a step in the documentation calls for a bolt at a specific anchor point, that anchor point already exists on the vehicle from the factory.
Bolt-In Is Reversible, Which Matters at Resale
Because bolt-in shelving does not modify the vehicle, it is removable. For owner-operators who plan to change vehicles after a few years, this matters. The shelving can be uninstalled and moved to the next van, as long as the next van uses the same platform. Alternately, a van with bolt-in shelving installed can be sold with the shelving in place, or the shelving can be removed and the van sold clean. Factory hard points return to their original state when bolts come out. No patched holes, no visible installation damage, no compromise to the vehicle’s resale value. For operators on multi-vehicle cycles, this reversibility is a real economic advantage over welded or drilled installations.
Fitment Across Common Van Platforms
Bolt-in kits fit Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, Mercedes Sprinter, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, Nissan NV, and BrightDrop across standard and extended wheelbase configurations and medium and high roof variants. The factory hard points each platform uses are different from each other, which means a bolt-in kit for a Transit will not install correctly on a ProMaster. Shop listings display fitment at the SKU level. Confirm the year, wheelbase, and roof height for your vehicle at checkout. For operators running older vans (pre-2015 Transits, earlier ProMaster model years), fitment may vary; our team can confirm whether a bolt-in kit will work for your specific vehicle before you order.
