Cargo Van Partitions and Bulkheads Canada | Every Style, Pre-Engineered

Flat Full-Height Partitions: The Default Bulkhead

Flat full-height partitions are the workhorse. A single vertical panel from floor to roof, sealing the cargo area off completely from the cab. They give you maximum load containment, the best noise dampening, the warmest cab in Canadian winters, and the highest crash protection rating. They also eat the most cargo space, sitting flush against the back of the seats and ignoring the contour of the cab. For trades carrying heavy or shifting cargo (HVAC, plumbing, electrical with reels), flat full-height is the default choice. For delivery routes where the driver never needs to see behind, flat full-height also works. The only real downside is the cargo space penalty: you give up about 5 to 10 centimetres of cargo length compared to a contoured design.

Contoured Full-Height: Recover Cargo Space

Contoured full-height partitions follow the natural slope and shape of the cab back wall, tucking behind the seats and headrests rather than sitting flush against them. The result is 5 to 10 centimetres of recovered cargo space along the full width of the bay. For long-bed work (ladders, pipe, lumber), that extra space matters. Contoured partitions still seal the cab off completely, still carry NSM certification, still dampen noise and contain cargo. They cost slightly more than flat partitions because the design and fabrication are more complex. Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit benefit most from contoured designs because their cab profiles have more pronounced contour. RAM ProMaster’s flatter cab geometry makes contoured partitions less impactful, so most ProMaster buyers stick with flat full-height.

Partial-Height with Window: Visibility and Light

Partial-height partitions stop short of the roof, typically at about 1.2 metres above the cargo floor. A glass or polycarbonate window panel sits in the upper section, giving the driver visibility from cab to cargo. The window can be fixed or sliding. Sliding windows let drivers reach into the cargo bay without leaving the cab, which delivery drivers and shuttle operators value. Visibility benefits include better rear sightlines, more natural light in the cab, and reduced sense of enclosure for drivers who spend full shifts behind the wheel. Trade-offs: less noise dampening, less cold-weather isolation, and reduced load containment in a crash. For city delivery routes, parcel work, and shuttle conversions, partial-height with window is often the right call. For service trades with heavy cargo, full-height is the safer choice.

Ladder Pass-Through and Specialty Cutouts

Ladder pass-through partitions include a horizontal cutout sized to feed a ladder, pipe, or long material from the cargo bay into the cab area, typically resting on the passenger seat or a dedicated rack. The cutout is sealed with a removable plug or hinged flap when not in use, preserving most of the noise and weather isolation of a full-height partition. Standard pass-throughs accommodate 12-foot and 16-foot ladders, which covers the working tool for residential electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work. Custom cutouts can be ordered for specialty applications: long pipe runs, conduit bundles, surveying equipment, or anything else that exceeds standard cargo bay length. We design and fabricate the cutout to spec at our Waterloo facility. Pass-through partitions cost more than standard full-height but eliminate the need for an external roof rack or trailer for occasional long-load work.

Cab Access Bulkheads and Mixed Configurations

Some fleets need full cargo bay isolation plus the ability to move between cab and cargo without leaving the vehicle. Bulkheads with a hinged or sliding access door solve this. The door is typically located on the passenger side and large enough for an adult to step through. Mobile service trades, security companies, and certain delivery operations benefit from this configuration. Access door bulkheads carry the same NSM certification as standard partitions, but they cost more and add a small amount of weight. Mixed configurations are common in larger fleets: flat full-height for heavy trades, partial-height with window for delivery routes, pass-through for trades carrying ladders, access door for mobile service. We build every configuration and ship across Canada to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Hamilton, London, Halifax, Saskatoon, Regina, Victoria, Mississauga, Brampton, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, Burlington, and Brantford.

Cargo Van Partition Styles FAQs

The questions buyers ask most often when choosing between cargo van partition styles for their fleet or owner-operator vehicle.

Flat full-height steel partitions offer the best crash protection because they seal the cargo area completely and steel handles impact best. Contoured full-height performs nearly as well. Partial-height with window offers less protection because cargo can travel over the lower partition section in a hard stop. All our partitions meet federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and carry NSM certification.

Yes, but it is more cost-effective to order the configuration you want from the start. Adding a window cutout to an installed partition means removing the partition, fabricating the cutout, and reinstalling. If you anticipate needing a window in the future, order partial-height with window or full-height with fixed window cutout up front.

Contoured full-height partitions recover about 5 to 10 centimetres of cargo length along the full width of the bay, depending on van model. For long-bed work (ladders, pipe, lumber), that matters. For trades with shorter cargo profiles, the difference is negligible.

Yes, but retrofitting means removing the existing partition and replacing it with a pass-through model. Most buyers order pass-through partitions up front. If you only occasionally need a long-load capability, a roof rack or trailer is usually a better option than a pass-through retrofit.

Yes. Every partition style we build carries the National Safety Mark, regardless of configuration. Flat, contoured, partial-height, pass-through, and access-door bulkheads all meet federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Documented compliance for fleet audits, provincial inspections, and insurance carriers.
