Deep Reach Adjustable Cargo Van Shelves | MKW Outfitters
Why Standard Shelf Depth Is Not Enough for Every Trade
The standard 12 to 14 inch van shelving bay exists for a reason: it fits inside the interior wall geometry of most cargo vans without intruding too far into the center cargo area. For most trades carrying smaller parts, fasteners, and standard tool sets, that depth works fine. But specific trades carry stock that standard bays cannot hold. HVAC technicians work with refrigerant bottles 16 to 20 inches tall. Plumbers stock longer fittings and valves. Electrical contractors carry conduit sections in pre-cut lengths. Contractors with mixed inventory need space for bulkier tool sets. Deep reach shelving solves this by extending bay depth to 18 to 24 inches, which fits the larger-format stock these trades actually carry.
Trade-Off Between Bay Depth and Walkway Space
Deep reach shelving changes the geometry of the van cargo area. Extending shelf bays an additional 6 to 10 inches toward the center of the van reduces the available walkway between left and right shelving by the same amount. On a medium roof van, this can mean the walkway between facing shelves drops from 30 inches to 18 inches, which is narrow but workable for single-tech service work. On a high roof long wheelbase van, the walkway stays generous even with deep reach on both sides. The decision of whether to use deep reach on one side, both sides, or not at all comes down to the cargo the van needs to carry and how much center-aisle space the tradesperson needs to work comfortably. Our team helps spec this during the order conversation if you are unsure.
Aluminum and Steel Deep Reach Options
Deep reach shelving is available in aluminum and steel. Aluminum is typically the right call because deeper shelves hold more stock, and deeper shelves in steel construction add significant weight to the van. A single deep-reach steel shelf loaded with plumbing fittings or HVAC refrigerant bottles can weigh 40 to 60 pounds of stock per shelf, and with 5 to 7 shelves per bay the total weight on one side of the van adds up fast. Aluminum shelving construction recovers significant payload compared to steel at the same bay depth. For trades carrying genuinely heavy point loads, steel deep reach shelving is still available, but most operators benefit from aluminum on deep reach builds specifically.
Fitment for Cargo Vans With Sufficient Interior Volume
Deep reach shelving is not suitable for every cargo van. Low roof Transits, short wheelbase ProMasters, and smaller cargo vans in general do not have the interior volume to support the deeper bay geometry without eliminating usable walkway or cargo floor. Our shop lists deep reach configurations specifically for medium and high roof variants of Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, Mercedes Sprinter, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, Nissan NV, and BrightDrop. Long wheelbase configurations are the most common candidates because they have the floor length to accommodate deep reach shelves without packing the cargo area too tight. Shop listings include the interior dimensions and recommended walkway space for each fitment, so you can confirm it works for your application before ordering.

Ordering, Shipping, and Install
Orders ship from our Waterloo facility across Canada. Ontario transit runs one to two business days. Quebec and the Prairies run three to five. BC and Atlantic Canada run five to seven. Deep reach shelving ships as a pre-engineered kit with mounting hardware, fitment brackets, divider kits (if ordered), and detailed install documentation. The install process is the same as standard-depth shelving, with mounting to factory hard points on the cargo area walls. A competent shop technician installs a full-side deep reach system in four to six hours. For buyers who prefer not to install, any commercial installer can handle the work, or ship the vehicle to our Waterloo facility for in-house install. NSM certification and warranty apply either way.
