Why Shelving Weight Matters More Than Most Operators Realize

Every pound of shelving in a cargo van comes out of the available payload for tools, parts, and cargo. For operators running close to gross vehicle weight on stock-heavy days, shelving weight is a real constraint. For fleet managers spec’ing vans for fuel economy, the same weight translates to a meaningful cost across thousands of kilometres per year. For EV upfits, battery weight already consumes a significant portion of the payload budget, leaving less room for everything else. Lightweight aluminum shelving addresses all three problems. Our lightweight aluminum systems recover 150 to 250 pounds on a full-side build compared to equivalent steel, without sacrificing the structural integrity required for commercial daily use.

How Lightweight Construction Works Without Sacrificing Durability

Lightweight aluminum construction uses the same welded frame and bolted hard point approach as our standard aluminum shelving, with frame dimensions optimized for weight while maintaining structural ratings for normal trade loads. The material is aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, which gets its strength from alloy composition and heat treatment rather than raw material thickness. The result is shelving that weighs significantly less than equivalent-capacity steel or even standard aluminum, while still handling the loading cycle of commercial daily work. For operators whose loads fall within standard trade ranges (meaning anything short of welders, generators, or cast iron stock on a single shelf) lightweight aluminum is the right material choice.

Critical for EV Cargo Van Upfits

Electric cargo vans like the Ford E-Transit, RAM ProMaster EV, and BrightDrop are engineered with specific payload budgets that already account for battery weight. The available payload for cargo, shelving, tools, and stock is measurably lower than an internal combustion equivalent. For an E-Transit upfit, using steel shelving can consume 200 to 300 pounds of the already-reduced payload budget on shelving structure alone, leaving less room for what the van actually carries. Lightweight aluminum is often the only shelving category that makes practical sense for EV upfits. It also contributes to better real-world range by keeping total vehicle weight down, which directly affects battery draw during acceleration and highway driving.

Fitment Across EV and ICE Cargo Van Platforms

Our lightweight aluminum shelving fits the same range of cargo vans as our standard aluminum, plus the growing EV cargo van platforms: Ford Transit, Ford E-Transit, RAM ProMaster, RAM ProMaster EV, Mercedes Sprinter, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, Nissan NV, and BrightDrop. For EV platforms specifically, we ensure the mounting hardware respects the battery pack geometry and routing of high-voltage cables inside the cargo area. Shop listings display fitment at the SKU level. For fleet operators running mixed EV and ICE platforms, we can spec consistent shelving configurations so the workflow stays the same regardless of which van the tradesperson is in that day.

Ordering, Shipping, and Install

Lightweight aluminum shelving ships from our Waterloo facility as a pre-engineered kit with mounting hardware and install documentation. A competent shop technician installs a full-side system in four to six hours. The install pattern is the same as standard shelving, with mounting to factory hard points on the cargo area walls. Any commercial installer can handle the work from our documentation, or the vehicle can ship to our Waterloo facility for in-house install. Warranty covers the product either way. NSM certification applies on the complete build. Shipping runs one to seven business days across Canada depending on destination province.

Common Questions About Lightweight Aluminum Shelving

These are the questions we hear most often from operators focused on weight savings. If your question is not here, our team is available before you order.

A lightweight aluminum shelving unit recovers 150 to 250 pounds of payload on a full-side van build compared to equivalent steel. That weight goes back into cargo capacity, improves fuel economy over the life of the van, and reduces strain on the rear suspension. For EV operators, the weight savings directly improves range per charge.

EV cargo vans like the Ford E-Transit, RAM ProMaster EV, and BrightDrop are payload-sensitive by design. Battery weight reduces the available payload budget compared to internal combustion equivalents. Lightweight aluminum shelving is often the only shelving category practical for EV upfits without eating into cargo capacity.

Lightweight aluminum still handles most trade loads. It is rated for the stock most tradespeople actually carry. Operators who carry unusually heavy point loads (welders, generators, cast iron plumbing stock) should look at heavy-duty aluminum instead. For standard trade work, lightweight aluminum is the right balance.

Yes. Lightweight aluminum shelving fits Ford Transit, Ford E-Transit, RAM ProMaster, RAM ProMaster EV, Mercedes Sprinter, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, Nissan NV, and BrightDrop across standard and extended wheelbase configurations. Shop listings display fitment at the SKU level.
