Why Mount Configuration Determines Floor Space
The mounting configuration of van shelving determines what the cargo area looks like when the shelves are stowed or not in use. Floor-mounted shelving puts structural posts on the cargo floor, which remain in place even if the shelves above them are removed. Central-island shelving sits in the middle of the cargo area, blocking the floor entirely. Side-mount shelving attaches to the side walls of the cargo area and extends inward, with no structure on the cargo floor at all. When side-mount fold-away shelving is stowed, the shelves fold upward against the wall and the cargo floor is completely clear, making the full cargo volume available for bulky items that could not fit around a floor-mounted shelving system.
When Side-Mount Specifically Makes Sense
Side-mount is the right choice for operators who specifically need the ability to clear the full cargo floor on demand. Moving companies loading mattresses, couches, and large furniture cannot work with floor-mounted shelving structure in the way. Appliance service operations occasionally carry refrigerators or washers that require the full cargo floor. Furniture delivery, construction material delivery, and any operator whose load occasionally includes oversized items benefits from side-mount. For operators whose cargo consistently fits around shelving (trade work, consistent parcel delivery, service work), side-mount does not offer a specific advantage over other mounting configurations. Side-mount is a feature chosen specifically for the floor-clearing capability when it matters.
Fold-Away Mechanism for Side-Mount
The fold-away mechanism for side-mount shelving is slightly different from center-or floor-mount fold-away. Side-mount shelves fold upward by rotating on a hinge at the wall, with the shelf swinging up against the wall above its deployed position. This is different from shelves that fold forward or downward. Gas struts or spring mechanisms assist the upward fold so the shelf can be stowed with one hand. Latches at the fully-stowed position hold the shelf against the wall through driving, and a deployed-position detent holds the shelf horizontal when in use. The result is a clean fold action that preserves the full floor when needed while providing structured shelf storage when not.

Side-mount fold-away shelving ships from our Waterloo facility as a pre-engineered kit with fold mechanism pre-assembled, mounting hardware for factory wall hard points, gas struts, and install documentation. A competent shop technician installs a full-side system in four to six hours. Install attaches the shelving assembly to the factory hard points on the cargo area side walls with no drilling into sheet metal. Documentation covers fastener torque specs and post-install fold verification. Any commercial installer can handle the work from our documentation, or the vehicle can ship to our Waterloo facility for in-house install. Warranty covers the full build. NSM certification applies on the complete system.
